African handicraft
The Kivuli Centre, situated in Riruta area, has become
a secure reference point for children, teenagers, women and many unofficial
groups of young people who need room to meet and organize initiatives. Among
others, a group paints batik, the characteristic hand painted fabric of indian
origin.
The boys of this group, after being trained by a master, learnt the technique
and started painting batik either drawing their inspiration from iconographic
subjects of the African tradition, or creating with their imagination. In
this way the boys have the chance to illustrate aspects of the young peoples
daily life in a big town such as Nairobi.
At Kivuli, futher handicraft laboratories are active, where the elder boys
of the centre besides training for a future job, manufacture leather items,
foot-balls, wooden drums, toys for children and so on in order to fund their
future advanced studies.
You can purchase batik and all handicraft items of Kivuli, through the fair trade network at the small desks organized by Amani or by contacting Amanis head office: amani@amaniforafrica.org
